Snr. Farm Hand / Assistant Dairy Manager

Our client's family owned and operated dairy enterprise is seeking an experienced and self motivated Senior Farm Hand / Assistant Dairy Manager to assist with the operation of a 300 cow dairy herd - milking all year round - in a 16 double up rapid exit dairy, fully computerized feeding and milk monitoring system.


The successful applicant MUST have a minimum of five years experience in the dairy industry and have extensive knowledge and competency with all facets of farming practices.  You must be able to work independently as well as within a team environment.



Job Description/Duties:

  • Milking- twice per day.
  • Responsibility for ensuring milking herd are well cared for
  • Checking dry cows and heifers
  • Ensuring all milk quality targets are reached
  • Mustering cattle for milking and mustering dry cows/ calving cows without force
  • AI certificate
  • monitoring heats and estrus alerts patches
  • Recording all information in farm diary, such as AI dates, drugs used, calving details
  • Learning and operating computerized herd management programs
  • Assisting calf supervisor with calves (moving, drenching, dehorning etc)
  • Maintaining dairy hygiene and attention to detail

Our client is a well-established dairy farming family, who owns and operates a large scale dairy enterprise at Katamatite East in Northern Victoria (12km to Katamatite – 16km to Cobram.  Both towns offer schooling / medical / sporting and all modern facilities.  Only a  short drive away is the tourist town of Yarrawonga on Lake Mulwala which offers boating, fishing and all recreational leisure activities).


An efficient, reliable and self-motived Senior Dairy Farm Hand is required to join and assist our client’s team - who has the necessary skills and ability to effectively and efficiently perform tasks involved in the daily operations on the farm.


The farm is predominately pasture based with partial mixed ration system – milking around 1400 cows in 30 aside double-up herringbone dairy fitted with all modern dairy technology including ACR’s, Auto ID & drafting, Dipping & Flushing etc. 


Employment Specifics

As you will be working under the direction of the owner/manager the successful applicant must have the following;-

A long established large scale dairy operation has a full-time position available for an Experienced Dairy Farm Operator or Couple. The farm is located on a main road approximately 20km’s from Colac.  The dairy operation consists of 800 high producing Holstein milking cows (split calving) plus all replacement heifers on farm.  The farm is self-sufficient, wherein most of the fodder is produced on farm, with limited use of outside contractors.




Working under the direction of the owner and 2IC, the applicant must have: -

  • Experience and knowledge in milking procedures and be familiar with cow health practices
  • A genuine interest in dairy farming
  • Enjoy working with others whilst having the ability to work independently at times
  • Reliability, punctuality, and a committed work ethic
  • Accept personal responsibility for animal’s health as to their work practices
