Senior Dairy Farm Operator / 2IC

An excellent opportunity has become available for an experienced, highly-skilled and self-motivated Senior Dairy Farm Operator / 2IC to join our client’s large scale progressive and modern dairy farm enterprise using current technology situated in the Casterton-Coleraine District of SW Victoria.


Centrally located only 15 minutes between Casterton & Coleraine townships which offer excellent modern facilities including schools / medical / shopping and all sporting & leisure activities. Hamilton is 30 mins and Mt. Gambier 50 min drive.


This well-established pasture and TMR farming operation consists of over 3,000 acres. 1,200 acres of which currently milks around 650 cows. Calving 1 x per year. The dairy is 50 unit rotary fully computerised shed - set up as a 1 person operation. Young stock are reared on a 900 acre out block.




As ‘hands-on’ Operator, you will continue to grow and pursue excellence in all facets of the farming operation on a day to day basis, working closely and under the direction of the Owner. Previous experience at this level or similar is essential.

Overview of Position


The Dairy Supervisor will have the responsibility and management of the day to day operation of the dairy shed. In addition to this, the successful candidate will be part of a team who will be committed to excellence in dairy production and sustainability. You will therefore have the competency and initiative to make decisions when required.



Employment Specifics


The successful candidate must have a minimum 5 years of experience in a similar role. You must be reliable and self-motivated with a progressive attitude who is able to ensure milk quality, all herd health and animal welfare standards are met.

The farm is pasture based, milking 300 cows in a 22 aside herringbone dairy with ACR’s.


The successful applicant must be highly skilled and self-motivated with a progressive attitude and demonstrate excellent work/management ethics. You must have at least 5 years previous experience within the dairy industry. Formal qualifications showing progression within the industry is preferred, however, not essential.



Role Responsibility / Key Accountabilities:-


Reporting to the Farm Owner and working under his direction, you will be responsible for the day to day “hands-on” running of the dairy enterprise including:-

About the business


Obi Obi Dairy is situated on 380 acres on the banks of the Obi Obi Creek, 6kms east of Kenilworth.  We milk 400 Holsteins and 20 Brown Swiss.  Our business includes milk sales to our milk pool and our own business Maleny Cheese. 


About the role


The position is for a permanent resident and will involve all day to day work associated with dairy farming pastures and irrigation, workshop and machinery. The skills of the applicant will dictate where the majority of the work will lie.


The business has grown during the past couple of years and the hands-on owners want this person to develop their carer as they work together with the owners and the existing farm team.


The role includes mobile plant operations to complete feeding (mixer wagon), effluent dispersal (slurry tanker) and grading as well as milking and assisting with electric fencing, equipment and plant maintenance (rotary dairy and implements).  Be responsible for animal health and AI breeding.

Skills and experience


Ability to work within a team and manage farm requirement safely and efficiently. Experience with rotary milking systems, animal herd health and AI are an advantage, but we already have a Herd Manager completing the majority of this work. You will have experience in operating and maintaining all farm machinery including 2 wheel ag bikes, quads, tractors, mixer wagons, implements such as slurry spreader and hard hose irrigation.


Experience with livestock in both grazing and milking herds, working with herd nutritionist and all farm team members. Experience with using computers and smartphone.


We expect the applicant would have at least 5 years recent working experience.  Have good reading and mathematical ability and a personality that is motivated and interested.

Experience in farm safety programs and an interest in own continued personal training and skill development essential.
