About the business and role


We are a sub-tropical dairy farm producing milk from a growing herd of cows.  We use science and experience to balance farm inputs and maximise production while using good farming practices and innovation.


We are a team of skilled and enthusiastic farmers who enjoy growing fodder, producing quality milk volume and component outcomes and using resources to maximise efficiency. We grow pastures and silage year-round and use pivot and hard hose systems. 


Job Tasks and responsibilities

  • Monitor and maintain reproductive performance records
  • Select cows for AI, complete mating and record keeping associated
  • Milk harvesting at either morning and afternoons as rostered
  • Supervise and lead less experience team members
  • Patience and care of animals
  • Follow protocols to administer drenches, vaccines, and other treatments of calves and cows
  • Plan and implement tractor work, fencing and weed control
  • Breeding for milk herd growth is the primary focus of this role and works in with other team members on farm. This job currently answers to the assistant farm manager and has the potential to develope into leadership role. Other leadership or partnership options may exist for the future for the right person as owners prepare for generational change.
  • Working hours include some early morning starts (4am) and/or weekend shifts, with 2 days off on a weekly basis. 

Skills and experience


To be successful for this role you must:

  • Have qualifications in dairy farming (or related industry or working towards);
  • Have experience in milking, care and treatment of calves & cows;
  • Artificial Insemination (AI) with recent practice
  • Tractor and or fencing experience;
  • Must demonstrate a commitment to WH&S requirements;
  • High Risk Work Licence (forklift operation) preferred, but not essential; and
  • Truck licence preferred, but not essential;

Others describe you as a self-motivated, well planned individual who thrives on interacting with others to achieve business outcomes, but comfortable operating autonomously and willing to learn.  Experience in leading a small team and an interest in farm safety and programs that support continued personal training and skill development.

As ‘hands on’ Farm Manager - this position will suit a self-motivated and progressive person who is focused on quality control and the production of a superior product. You will continue to grow and pursue excellence in all facets of the day to day farming operation.


Having the desire to be part of a great team, supported by the current Farm Owner with autonomy in day to day decision making (training & support provided within a small company structure), will ensure you have the resources to succeed in the day to day “hands-on” running of the dairy enterprise, including:-

  • Must be highly skilled and self-motivated with a progressive attitude
  • Fully conversant with modern dairy farming techniques, including herd management, people management skills, OH&S protocols, milk quality and assurance, pasture management and all associated animal husbandry practices together with staff supervision
  • Demonstrate excellent work / animal welfare ethics with attention to detail
  • Previous management experience or a similar senior role advantageous, however, training & support will be provided to the right candidate with a willingness to learn.
  • Demonstrate exceptional organisational skills / have the ability to work independently

Our client is looking for an experienced and competent person or couple to manage the day to day operations of the farming enterprise, including staff.  Experience in all facets of dairy farming operations together with proven herd management history and OH&S procedures and protocols is essential.



  • At least 5 years full time experience in the dairy industry working at similar or 2IC level
  • Proven herd management / breeding programs / pasture management history

An opportunity has become available for an assistant Dairy Herd Manager / 2IC Couple to join our client’s team on a progressive, 1,300 cow herd in inland Northern NSW.


This modern pasture-based enterprise – comprising over 800 acres of Centre Pivot irrigation - strives for excellence in cow health and production and boasts state-of-the art feeding, reproductive and rumen health monitoring infrastructure and a modern computerised 60 stand rotary dairy with ACR’s, SCR Collars Milk Meters.


Reporting directly to the Farm / Feed Manager and working closely with the Assistant Manager, the role requires you to manage the milking, breeding and health of the herd as well as play a role in feeding and pasture allocation. AI, computer use, some milking and night checks on calving, strip grazing, dairy plant maintenance, feeding of livestock.


As a working herd manager you would be required to function as part of the dairy team and supervise staff.

Ideally you will have:


  • Previous experience managing dairy cows in large herds
  • Skills in dairy reproduction and health including AI programs and milk quality programs / AI Certificate / calving experience
  • Minimum 5 years dairy experience / formal qualifications preferred, but not essential
  • Experience in supervising staff / A willingness to work in a team environment and communicate effectively
  • Punctuality / cleanliness / attention to detail
  • Machinery experience
