About the Position

 

An excellent opportunity has become available for an experienced, highly skilled and self-motivated Dairy Farming Couple or Team to join our client’s progressive large scale dairy farming entity located near Forbes in Central New South Wales.  Only a 15 minute drive to Forbes CBD which offers excellent modern facilities, including schools / medical / shopping and all sporting & leisure activities.

 

This well-established diversified farming operation consists of 1400ha expanding over 3 farms.  The major enterprise is Dairy, with breeding ewes, Angus cattle and dry land cropping also being incorporated in the business.

 

The main Dairy block is located west of Forbes on the Lachlan River with 240ha of irrigation including flood & travelling irrigation.  The dairy shed is a 42 stand rotary with both pasture and TMR feeding programs implemented.

 

Key Specifics – to be considered for the role

 

Reporting directly to the Farm Owner, the role requires you to assist with the day to day running of the dairy, milk harvesting, herd health, feeding cows and caring for dry stock and young calves.

 

Working as team members, you will be required to function as part of the dairy team, but also independently at times with a willingness to ensure all quality targets are met and adhered to.

  • Genuine interest in the dairy industry – with a committed/progressive attitude
  • Exceptional organisation and communication skills
  • Excellent skills with milk harvesting, mastitis detection, animal health and herd management
  • AI experience is preferred
  • Computer knowledge and understanding
  • Ability, interest and initiative to take on more responsibility when required
  • Must be able to work in a strong team environment
  • Competency with operation or Tractors / Machinery
  • Committed to Safe Work Practices (OH&S)
  • Demonstrate a neat and tidy appearance with attention to detail
  • Must hold a current driver’s licence

Role Responsibilities

  • Milk harvesting / mastitis control / heat detection
  • Herd health / record keeping / treatments
  • Maintain Milk Quality and Assurance
  • Tractor operation – feeding out to stock and assisting with silage at peak times
  • Assisting with calving / post calving monitoring
  • Maintain accurate record keeping database
  • All other general dairy farming practices – as required

The Farm

Situated 15 minutes from Shepparton, 17 minutes from Numurkah.

Both Primary & Secondary buses past the gate to Shepparton. SMOTA (St Mary’s of the Angels – Nathalia) bus within a 5 minute drive.

Just over 2 hours to Melbourne or Mt. Buller snowfields.  Only 45 minutes to the Murray River which offers fishing, boating, camping & all outdoor activities.  So many options for leisure time pursuits available locally from numerous sporting events/activities, fine dining, theatre etc with no time to be bored!

 

The farm is large scale, with some land in use for grain production.

Single operator rotary dairy with full automation & heat detection collars integrated with software. Recent upgrade of software, clusters (lightest ones available at 1.2kg) & pulsators.

Calf facility with 4 De Laval auto feeders, capable of rearing up to 120 calves.

Responsibilities

Fetching of cows for milking & locking cow away after milking.

Milking, cleaning up, shed hygiene & maintenance. Morning wash up to commence by 7am (end of off-peak power). Ensuring that milk remains in premium quality band.

All health treatments, including examination of sore feet & all associated data entry into dairy software.

Pasture rotation & allocation.

Irrigation via an automated system.

All feeding out of milking herd, dry stock & young stock (calves are shifted off-farm after weaning). Any other associated tractor work.

Calving of cows requiring assistance & any post calving treatment.

Calf feeding & rearing.

Involvement in all stock work including drying off, de-horning, freeze branding, drenching, vaccinating & heat detection collars.

Assistance with sowing, hay & silage making.

Moving of baled silage to storage area.

Fencing & infrastructure repairs.

Scraping of yards, feed pads etc & manure spreading.

Liaise with farm owners on weekly & seasonal planning.

All other tasks involved in the running of the farm.

 

Requirements

To be considered for this role, you will have:

High level skill set to manage the day to day operations of a 300 cow entity.

Committed to animal welfare, quality and continuous improvement.

Integral knowledge and passion for the dairy industry and latest technologies.

Looking for a long term role where you can continue to grow and develop on a progressive dairy farm.
